Big Data in 2015 #BigData Revolution

Big data is at the foundation of all the megatrends that are happening today”

Use Predictive Algorithms

Primer to Data-Mining

2015 may be the year we see more of the true potential of Big Data, and with that comes new applications in Machine-Learning and predictive algorithms.

You have to think of Big Data not just in terms of huge storage of information, but as in the stream of data in our lives that keeps getting bigger and therefore faster. That flow of information is what machine learning will be able to use to come to some rather unexpected and tranformative conclusions which will drive new trends in society, culture, education, business and of course technology.

So what does this mean? This means that every person (is a personalized segement) will have their “informational equivalent” and data-sets floating around in cyberspace about every possible detail known about them and calculated instantly and used as variables from everything from Advertising campaigns to health and saftey.

Predictive machine learning is what one day enables science-fiction to enter the realm of possiblity where profiling and what you are about to do, can be punished based upon the liklihood that you are to engage in that potetnally criminal activity BEFORE you do it! But let’s not get carried away. To have an alert on you that you are high risk to have a heart-attack in the next 30min or have your car signal you to wake up since you have fallen asleep at the wheel is a good thing!

It will definatley make society more efficient!

To get an idea of the growth involved here in the domain of Big Data,

“Big Data is expected to be worth 70 Billion by 2017, where it was worth 5 Billion in 2012.”

Some of the trends in 2015:

  • Improved In-Memory Databases: better at tracking in real-time and faster data analyzing for quicker decision-making.
  • Internet of Things: More sensor driven data, where reality becoming increasling hooked up to the Matrix.
  • Auotmated Platforms: more automated data gathering, analyzing and predictive softeware that cuts down on Data-scientists
  • Deeper Customer Insight: Multi-dimensional ways to gather more information from users, like wearble items, etc…
  • HR Analytics: Analytics will change the way we monitor our employees, hire new candidates and optimimze workflow and track employee happiness.
  • No Ownership: We expect to see a more fluid sharing of data from top managers throughout companies where a democratiziation of data comes more normative. Meaning your average middle managment department will have more strategic insight into company wide data possibly improving our organizational IQs.
  • Expect to see BI Dashboards of all kinds turning up at the workplace. B2B devices to give professionals first-access to analytics and new forms of strategic business intelligence in their domain. That is, new information tools for them to better to do their jobs.

The crazy thing about Big Data Revolution (BDR) is just how wide-spread this will be, it will touch and transform nearly every domain of human activity and be a prelude to the automation of many things, resulting likely in a more effecicient society but also influence employment:

Beyond 2015

That element of Prediction is not far off as in some fields is already here. As Machine-learning becomes more embedded in society and technology, we’ll not only have a better understading of patterns of information and ourselves but a new grasp of change itself. However, there are many new emerging technologies which will radically change our lives:

  • By 2016, 3D printing of tissues and organs (bioprinting) will cause a global debate about regulating the technology or banning it for both human and non-human use.
  • By 2017, 80% of people will collect, track and barter their personal data for cost savings, convenience and customisation
  • By 2020, consumer data collected from wearable devices will drive five percent of sales from the Global 1000
  • By 2020 Free Univerities wil be a legitamite alternative to conventional institutions and will flourish and be accessible to all with an internet connection.
  • By 2020, we will have multiple profiles of us (based on predictive algorithms) about our behavior, tendencies and likely choices, future habits and evolution. (the majority of these will exist without our consent or even knowledge).

It’s definately exciting, daunting and interesting to be alive during this revolution. You thought you knew what the information age was? It has only just begun…
